The Torresdale Suffolk Stud was founded in 1970 by James’s grandfather, Erle Lindsay, at Isla Bank. The flock was relocated to Stoneburn Station in 2021, where the ewes have adapted exceptionally well to the Nenthorn Valley’s hill-country environment and continue to produce impressive lamb growth.

Today, our 387 stud ewes are run under genuine commercial conditions alongside approximately 7,500 Romney ewes, separating only when required for mating and lambing. All stud lambs are DNA parentage-tested at tailing, allowing the ewes to lamb naturally without intensive pedigree recording or additional shepherding. From each season’s progeny, approximately 100 young rams are retained for further assessment and selection.

Torresdale genetics are proven within our own commercial operation, with Suffolk rams used across 40% of our Romney flock. In our most recent season, 76% of terminal lambs were finished at weaning, achieving an average carcass weight of 19.1kg—real performance achieved under real commercial farming conditions.
